My art practice is fundamentally autobiographical and motivated by the creative process of making the invisible visible. It is a kinetic conversation that enables me to attune to the emotional movements within and around me addressing ideas of identity, memory and building connections. Through the act of creation a mindful dance between balance and control plays forth, challenging my artistic identity and nurturing a climate of discovery.
The ‘Drawings in Thread’ series began by tracing the cycles of grief and loss that followed the death of a significant family member. The series delved into the void of losing a meaningful connection and exteriorized the circuitous process of memory and mourning. Making intuitive circular marks using a mechanical tool on paper allowed me to move with the recollection of personal memories that are intimately connected with a ‘sense of self’. Each circumference inscribes a recalled memory, circling a moment in an attempt to recapture the essential core of the experience. And yet, each turn leaves a permanent mark imprinting a new layer on our reality and augmenting how we remember. As a whole, the circular ‘drawings’ evoke the impossibility of actually getting back to core of memory, yet also ritualizes and deepen the relationship to the memory remembered.
