My art practice is fundamentally autobiographical and motivated by the creative process of making the invisible visible. It is a kinetic conversation that enables me to attune to the emotional movements within and around me addressing ideas of identity, memory, loneliness, and grief. Since 2016 I have been engaged in looking at the origins of confidence and the concept of self-worth where the relationship to an inner and outer critical gaze (culturally enacted and self-imposed) is challenged through expressive mark-making. Through the act of creation a mindful dance between balance and control plays forth, challenging my artistic identity and nurturing a climate of discovery. My current painting series (2017) continues the inquiry of confidence and self-worth by defining an artistic sensibility where acceptance and compassion merge encouraging rediscovery and supporting the redefining of ‘self’. It is in the redefining that the inner narrative which is often fueled by failures, judgements and loses can be reconciled to support self-worth, acceptance and growth. My series entitled ‘The Courageous Feminine’ represents relational connection and passive collaboration – pieces have been created to be sent to friends as a statement of friendship, love, support, and appreciation.
